“The things that are impossible with people are possible with God.” ~Luke 18:27
Possible. A word so overflowing with hope.
With God, joy is possible. Peace is possible. Life itself is possible.
I don’t mean life as in waking up in the morning, breathing a few times, and surviving another work day. I mean life, real life. A life filled with possibilities and potential, with an overwhelming anticipation of what God might reveal between sunrise and sunset.
When was the last time you woke up so eager to face the day that you beat your alarm clock, fully awake before the preset time? So eager to see the beauty of our Risen Savior beaconing you to a new day? Perhaps a day filled with the same routine as any other day, but still a day filled with Him and His amazing grace.
What is the context of this verse? If you’ve read anything on here, you know I love to look back at the context. This is right at the end of the story in which the rich man asked Jesus how to enter heaven. Jesus answered first by saying that if a person were to sell everything they own, they’d still have treasure in heaven. Jesus followed that by saying that it’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for the wealthy to enter heaven.
Does that mean God’s calling all of us to be poor? No. That would be adding words that aren’t there. Elsewhere the Bible says that God gives wealth to some so that they can bless others. Rather, He is saying that when we become self-sufficient, it becomes harder to see our need for God.
Following God requires that we give up striving for life on our own strength. Eternal life cannot be earned. There’s no amount of perfection that will get you any closer to heaven’s gates. The Law simply cannot be met by human will power. And, there’s no deceiving God. He alone knows our hearts.
But in Him, LIFE IS POSSIBLE.
Real life. Not a life that we create. Not a life that we can dream up. I heard a wise professor say just today that dreams and goals are great, but we don’t know what the future holds. If we’re living with such a focus on the future, we’ll miss the life that God has for us today.
Today, God has called you to live. He has called you to have joy. What is the impossible task that you’re facing? God’s “possible” looks nothing like our “possible,” because our “possible” is actually impossible. What impossible task are you staring at that God can, in His way, turn to possible? Embrace the life that He wants to give you, and your impossible will become His possible.
